Schedule conflicts are bound to happen at times and just like any class students may be asked to step out of PE for assessments or other services. It's important to note that doing this consistently is ineffective and violating student's Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). For the rare occasions that this may occur and on days that students don't have PE, incorporate movement breaks to hold student attention. Applying movement to the daily curriculum, such as writing out big letters in the air, offers them with multiple means of representation as well as firing their brains up for better comprehension of later material. Focus your attention on this excellent document for activity breaks, benefits of applying movement and show your students the video of funny movement breaks that allow them time to refocus. The Yoga alphabet is a great short activity that allows children to practice their letters and stretch. Including videos in the classroom presents students with multiple means of engagement and representation for better access of the material.
